Sterilization

In practice the need for feasibility of sterilization of animals is always open for discussion for veterinarians. Castration (sterilization) - is the cessation of gonadal activity. They are removed surgically this is due to violation of their function or other reasons.

In veterinary medicine practical castration is carried out only by surgical procedure. There is fact just like any other operation this procedure can’t be considered absolutely safe for the body. Operation - is always stress, trauma, blood loss, the need for a range of medicines etc. In other words, it is always - a risk. Yet there are plenty of fairly strong arguments in favor of sterilization, both social and health-related to the animal. Let's try to understand some of the main ones.

For a start sterilization is perhaps the most humane method of controlling the number of animals, including the homeless. On the other hand sterilization of animals exclude animals breeding with congenital malformations and thus prevent the birth of animals doomed to disability. Apart from this sterilization reduces the level of aggressiveness of animals caused by excessive sexual drive, and hence reduces the risk of related problems: the loss of an animal due to attacks on people.

If we talk about medical aspects of "usefulness" of sterilization, we should note the following points. Given the inevitable sexual abstinence pets have a very high incidence of chronic prostatitis, as well as inflammatory diseases of the uterus and ovaries, for example, against the background of false pregnancy. The practice of our clinic shows that conservative treatment of animals with inflammatory diseases of the sexual sphere as a rule doesn’t give long-term positive effect. In turn the frequent recurrence of the disease sooner or later leads to the need for surgical intervention. The risk is of such an operation against a background of long-term toxicity, depletion of the body's defenses, of course, is much higher than in the case of routine sterilization.

Categorically it is unacceptable in our view to regulate sexual activity and hunting of an animal with the use hormones. This leads to a serious discord metabolic processes in the organism and consequently to a variety of diseases, including cancer. The vast majority of tumors of prostate and mammary glands are the so-called hormone-dependent tumors, and the best way of treating and preventing this is castration. This will also protect your pet from the risk of developing other cancers of the reproductive system of the body, such as ovarian cysts, tumors of the uterus, sarcoma and other illnesses.

Returning to the issue of risks associated with surgical castration of animals-we do not recommend early sterilized before puberty. Considering the possibility of sterilization should be no earlier than 6-8 months, i.e. when the basic conditions are created for maintaining a full hormonal background and when the animal’s body is fully completed growing and formed as a whole, and only when the animal has reached its sufficient mass.

In our Center castration is performed under general anesthesia with the traditional observance of sterile operating room, materials and tools. Castration of males doesn’t take long it is a superficial operation and is done by opening of the scrotal incision and removing the testes. Note that female sterilization is more complicated, time consuming and is an abdominal operation. Sterilization of females in our clinic is conducted by hysterectomy with appendages. Some specialists use the method of partial castration of females i.e., the removal of the ovaries is carried out with preservation of the uterus or fallopian tubes which are tied up. Such operation will save the animal from an unwanted pregnancy, but it will keep the rut and its attendant behavior. However, such an approach, in our experience, is fundamentally wrong, because very often this leads to inflammatory processes in the preserved uterus and in result there is the need for repeated surgery.

Post-operative period is a mandatory course conducted with a preventive antibiotic therapy and post-operative treatments on stitches.

In conclusion we note that this article touched only a fraction of the problems and issues related to the subject of sterilization of domestic animals. Every time it is different with each patient, this depends on their: body, character, habits and living conditions. There are a mass of additional nuances which should all be taken into account, and to trust such an important decision in your pet’s life can only be carried out by an experienced specialist.
