Warning: Piroplasmosis!

Warning: Piroplasmosis!

All year round your dog needs a walk in the fresh air. With the onset of the first Spring days and warm climate until late Autumn, there is dog danger: the mites(ticks) – carriers of piroplasmosis, a deadly disease for dogs. Meadow or pasture mites (family of Ixodidats) habitate in the grass and bushes, which are everywhere: in urban gardens, parks, and everywhere outside the city. After the walk you must inspect your pets’ muzzle. Most often, mites stick and are found on dogs muzzle, neck, legs and tail, but can also be found on any other part of the body. Animals are only attacked by hungry females.

What is a mite? The look and feel of a mite – is like a little hard "wart", a greyish, brown or black colour, roughly the size of 2-3 mm. If the mite has already sucked, the size of it is larger: up to 10-15 mm.

How to remove a mite? You can’t pull the mite with your fingers. Proboscis of the mite is situated deep in the skin and whilst pulling you could break it, which on the place of the bite will cause an inflammation. If this is the case you should immediately contact your veterinarian. If this is not possible, you can apply a thick layer of fat such as cream or Vaseline to the skin. In 15-20 minutes in very careful rotational motion anti-clockwise, try to remove the mite with the proboscis. Then treat the bite with antiseptic.

What is Piroplasmosis? Unfortunately, grazing mites are carriers of diseases dangerous to dogs - piroplasmosis. Most often, contamination of piroplasmosis occurs in Spring and Autumn – rarer in Summer. The stimulant of piroplasmosis - Piroplasma canis – is a small intracellular parasite, which enters into the blood cells and destroys them. If your dog mite bite has been infected, from 5-15 days disease develops.

What are the first signs of piroplasmosis? Closely monitor your pet. Unusual lethargy, poor appetite, fever, and especially appearance of dark-coloured urine - all of which should alert the owner and contact a veterinarian. At this stage piroplasma laboratory can find the disease in the blood of the animal and the disease can be cured. If this is not done, then the long term the internal organs get damaged such as - kidneys, liver and heart. Icteric staining appears, mucous membranes are visible and whites of the eyes. Urination and heart rate also suffer. If Chronic piroplasmosis is not fouund : a high temperature rise is not noticed, the owners do not notice the darkening of the urine, the dog is lethargic, not eating properly for 2-3 months, anemia (hematoglobulin can fall to 30 g / l or even lower), and severe damage to internal organs. If in all these cases the dog haven’t received treatment in time, it can die!

Contact a veterinarian without any delays! Do not treat by yourself! Carefully follow veterinarian doctor's orders!

Immunity After a full recovery from piroplasmosis, there is no immunity to the disease, so there is a chance of repeated contamination of the infection.

You can get pet protection against mites: drops, sprays, collars.
